What are the most beautiful places in Montenegro?

The Ostrog Monastery, the must-see visit

The Ostrog Monastery welcomes thousands of travellers every year, who visit it for its beauty or come on pilgrimage. This monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church was built into the cliff of Mount Ostrog in the 17th century. Its white walls, which stand out against the ochre rock, make it a particularly photogenic historical building. A cave in the church houses the relics of St Basil of Ostrog, which pilgrims claim will heal and cope with various difficulties.

Kotor, one of the pearls of the Adriatic coast

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, the walled city of Kotor is renowned for its historical and cultural heritage, but also for the nature that surrounds it. The town is located at the bottom of the Kotor Mouths, an arm of the Adriatic Sea that enters the land of Montenegro. The town was founded in the Middle Ages and is surrounded by high walls. Within its walls is the old town, called Stari Grad, which can be explored on foot with your nose in the air to enjoy the many historic buildings. The Bay of Kotor, reminiscent of the Norwegian fjords, is renowned for its beauty, with steep mountains plunging into the blue water.

Lovcen National Park, a hiker's paradise

Located in the southwest of the country, Lovcen National Park is one of the most beautiful places in Montenegro. The name of the country, which means "Black Mountains", is inspired by the dark walls of Mount Lovcen. The 6,220-hectare park has many hikes to offer for the pleasure of sportsmen and women. If you had to choose only one place to visit within the park, it would be the Njegoš mausoleum in which a philosopher and poet from the royal family is buried. It is indeed the highest mausoleum in the world, as it is at an altitude of 1,657 metres. It is also an opportunity to have a panoramic view of the region, which even allows you to see Albania and Croatia when the weather is good.

The most beautiful road-trips to do in Europe

Lake Skadar, for nature lovers

Lake Skadar, which is one of the largest lakes in Europe, is a must-see when discovering Montenegro. The lake is surrounded by mountains and is home to hundreds of species of wild birds. It is possible to sail on the lake between the water lilies, but also to go up the river of the same name, on small boats or larger boats. The Lesendro fortress, which has dominated the waters since the 19th century, can also be found on the shore of Lake Skadar.

Budva, postcard beaches

Budva is one of the places not to be missed during a visit to Montenegro for swimming and relaxing. There are long sandy beaches along the emerald waters of the Adriatic Sea. The many bars and restaurants give Budva a festive atmosphere, which can get crowded in summer. For those who would like to get away from the tourist scene, it is possible to go to the island of Sveti Nikola. This little-known island is only accessible by boat and has three secluded beaches that make you feel cut off from the world.
